The driver of a Chevy Impala was arrested early Sunday morning following a high-speed chase along SR-146 near Dillon Lake in Muskingum Township.

A trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol attempted to make a traffic stop after observing the Impala, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, driving erratically. The driver refused to pull over and a high-speed chase ensued along State Route 146 between Marshall Hill Road and Tunis Road.

The driver, later identified as Todd A. Johnson from Newark, then turned right onto Wilshire Drive before losing control of his vehicle — driving through a driveway and over a retaining wall of a residence.

According to an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper, the single occupant then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Multiple units from both OSP and the Muskingum County Sheriff’s office were dispatched to the location for assistance.

Both an aviation unit from the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Columbus and a Muskingum County K-9 were also requested for assistance. With the help of the MCSO K-9 unit, officers were able to locate Johnson farther down the road along Tunis Road. The aviation unit was canceled before it was able to assist in the search.

An unidentified illegal substance of personal quantity was found along the path Johnson had taken as authorities were searching for him.

Johnson was taken to OSU Wexner Medical Center for injuries sustained during his escape.

He will be charged with fleeing and eluding, as well as OVI. Additional charges are expected following a review by the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office and Falls Township EMS were all on scene.
