Zanesville police and fire first responders rescued a woman who became trapped in her home during a house fire Sunday morning.

Police were first to arrive at the home at the corner of Bell and Taylor Streets around 9 a.m. where they found the woman unable to escape due to heat.

“The quick actions of the officers there let us know that there was somebody still in the house,” said Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Bell.

Firefighters arrived shortly after and helped get her to safety by climbing through the window.

According to Bell, the woman was taken to Genesis Hospital by Value Care. He said her injuries are unknown until he can talk to her, but she was being treated for smoke inhalation.

Facing a short staff, police officers assisted firefighters from Zanesville and Falls Township by spraying the outside of the house while firefighters worked from the inside.

Bell said a hole had to be cut from the roof to ensure the fire was contained in the attic.

As of 9:30 a.m., most of the fire was extinguished, leaving just hot spots for firefighters to manage.
