Rally’s involving community in nonperishable food drive to benefit Salvation Army
November 1, 2019
On Friday, Nov. 8, Rally’s’ customers can bring in two non-perishable food items as a donation to the Salvation Army in exchange for 10 percent off their food order.
For many years, Rally’s employees at the Maple Avenue location have given back to the community by hosting in-house donation drives by adopting children from the Angel Tree or packing small bags with hygiene products.
This year, general manager Bill Runkle said the fast-food restaurant wanted to involve the community in giving back, as well, by providing an incentive for people to donate.
“Basically, it’s to kind of help raise for the Salvation Army for their baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas that they do each year,” Runkle said. “We try to pick something to do each year and that’s what we decided we were going to do this year.”
Once football season hits, Runkle allows his employees to wear sports jerseys on the weekend for a $5 donation per weekend. The money raised from those weekends is used to adopt children off the Angel Tree.
“We’ve never really involved the community a lot in anything we’ve done in the past, we’ve just done everything ourselves as a store, ” Runkle said.
In an effort to do a little extra this year, Runkle said the store is going to do both the jersey fundraiser in-house and involve the community in the non-perishable food drive.
While the food benefits those who are less fortunate in the community, the Rally’s employees are hoping that community members who have the means to help will donate to the cause.
“And we’re giving them the added thing of a discount on their food here,” Runkle said.
The store averages about 200 transactions per day, Runkle said.
On Nov. 8, Rally’s will also have small gifts and grab bags for children.
“We just try to do what we can to help everybody out,” Runkle said. “We’re pretty small around here because we’re the only Rally’s close to us … so we try to do what we can locally.”
