Week End Wrap Up April 7

Yesterday’s weather was very ideal. Unfortunately, it appears spring is catching up to us for the next couple of days with some thunderstorms. At least it’ll still be warm. Everybody knows the drill by now, buckle up we’re looking into the good news first.

The good stuff

  • A New Concord resident that joined the Red Cross last year recently returned from her third deployment to a natural disaster zone. Pam Elliott-Dixon went to Alabama to assist those affected by the tornadoes in March — near or far, Elliott-Dixon is spending her retirement helping others. Full story.
  • The South Zanesville Fire Department made history this week with the start of its first paid staff since the department’s founding. The paid staff is part-time between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and returns to a volunteer-based department after 6 p.m. Full story.

A few accidents

  • Last night, five teenagers were involved in a rollover accident on SR-60. One 15-year-old was ejected from the car and was being treated for serious injuries. Full story.
  • An abandoned home was destroyed by a fire after the owner’s brother-in-law started the fire in an attempt to raze the home but the blaze got a little out of control. Full story.
  • The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office located a minor explosive device on Tuesday. No one was in danger. Full story.
  • Early Wednesday morning the driver of an SUV was trapped inside his vehicle after losing control along SR-60. The driver was taken to Genesis Hospital with unknown injuries. Full story.

Crimes of various sorts

  • A shooting occurred Monday evening on Schaum Avenue. Authorities executed a search warrant Tuesday at the residence where the shooting occurred the night before. First story. Eight people were taken into custody in relation to the shooting throughout the day Tuesday, two of which were apprehended at the Super 8 hotel on National Road. Second story. Six of the eight people taken into custody were actually charged. Last story … well, the last story for now. It will be followed up on later.
  • Four people from Zanesville have been arrested as a result of a multi-county drug investigation conducted by law enforcement from the Muskingum County/Zanesville City Joint Drug Unity, Perry County Sheriff’s Office and Central Ohio Drug Enforcement task force. Full story.
  • Two men were added to the most wanted list last week. They have both been taken into custody and were replaced by five new faces this week. Brandon Sweeney, William Dufran, Colton Barcus, Shelbie Glass and Brett Kanavel were added to the Muskingum County Most Wanted List Monday morning. Full story.

Court corner 

  • The former Muskingum University student convicted of murdering her infant will not be granted the possibility of parole following the denial of her post-conviction relief petition. There were a couple of days allotted to the hearing but Judge Mark Fleegle decided against granting parole in Emile Weaver’s case. Full story.
  • The mother accused of murdering her infant son by leaving him in a hot car in over 90-degree weather pleaded guilty to charges Monday. Samantha Donohoe pleaded guilty, through tears, to one first-degree felony count of manslaughter and one third-degree felony count of endangering children. Full story.
  • A local BP owner was sentenced to 18 months in prison after he attempted to abduct an 18-year-old employee. The woman’s mother and step-father were also charged and sentenced in the case as the BP owner attempted to pay the couple to keep quiet about the event. Full story.
  • Remember the man that was convicted by a jury for stealing a house in Roseville that belonged to someone else? That man’s girlfriend pleaded guilty Monday to her participation in the events. Jessica Eblin pleaded guilty to 10 felony counts. Full story.
  • An elderly man pleaded guilty to felonious assault after he allegedly stabbed his wife’s cousin the thigh when he stepped between the two’s altercation. Full story.

Roads

  • A portion of Dresden Road in Muskingum Township was closed Sunday due to shifting ground beneath the roadway. The shifting ground is causing edges of the road to also shift and break away. Full story.
  • Linden Avenue got a little facelift this week thanks to some crack sealing. Full story.
  • A portion of Underwood Street was closed Tuesday. Have no fear, the entire road is open now. Full story.
