The New Lexington varsity girls basketball team has a new coach for the upcoming season.

Jay Chadwell, former Georgetown High School standout and head coach at Logan High School, will be the new head of the girls team this winter. The move was announced Monday on New Lexington athletic’s Twitter page.

Chadwell helped lead the G-Men to a state championship in the 2006-07 season, scoring 26 points in the finals. As a coach at Logan, he went 28-20 through two seasons.

New Lexington athletic director Anthony Stephens said Chadwell’s coaching experience coming close to the area worked in his favor in the hiring, as well as his work ethic.

“He’s a very committed coach and he’s been very dedicated to the teams he’s been involved with,” Stephens said Friday. “He was very knowledgeable about the game and has had success as a player and a coach. We liked his commitment.”

After finishing just 1-21 last season, expectations might not be at an all-time high, but Stephens said he likes the fit Chadwell has with New Lexington.

A schedule for the Panthers has not been updated on the school’s website at this time.
