As a result of the government shutdown, food stamps will be distributed early for the month of February.

According to Troy McCollister, Director of Muskingum County Job and Family Services, SNAP cards will be reloaded electronically on or about Jan. 20 throughout the entire state.

McCollister said the amount will be the same as usual and will be accepted throughout the month of February. The only change is the time of distribution, which will be a couple weeks in advance.

About 16,000 Muskingum County residents rely on SNAP benefits each month, McCollister said.

“The vast majority of people that use this system are working people,” said McCollister. “They’re just struggling to make ends meet.”

MCJFS suggests food stamp recipients carefully spend their allowance in February to make the food supply lasts.

Anyone in need of further assistance is encouraged to reach out to local food banks.

At this time, it is still unknown how SNAP will operate past February without an approved budget. McCollister said MCJFS will keep the public informed once more is known.

SNAP is the only program offered by MCJFS affected by the government shutdown.

McCollister said Medicaid, ADC and cash assistance programs will continue as usual.
